Luciana Berger, the Shadow Minister for Public Health, has offered her support for our upcoming White Tie Ball and our ongoing campaign.
Speaking to Dr Jude Oben, founder of the campaign, the recently re-elected MP for Liverpool Wavertree said:
“There has never been a more potent time to act.
The Obesity Action Campaign is a fantastic initiative which is playing a vital role in combatting the obesity crisis in the UK. They are leading the way in building our understanding of obesity and how to tackle its causes. I would like to thank Dr Oben and the rest of the team for their tireless work to shine a light on this critical issue.
With a third of children leaving primary school obese or overweight, and warnings from the World Health Organisation World Health Organisation that obesity is set to rise over the coming years, there has never been a more pertinent time to act.
This is why I am delighted to support the Obesity Action Campaign’s first White Tie Fundraising Ball. I hope you enjoy what promises to be a wonderful evening and please give generously to this very worthy cause.”
Dr Jude added:
“According to the World Health Organisation, the UK has one of the worst obesity rates in Europe. By 2030 nearly 39 million adults in the UK will be overweight or obese.
The consequences are horrendous. Obesity causes cancer of the oesophagus, liver, pancreas, colon, prostate, breast and ovarian.
Obesity also causes heart disease, strokes and type 2 diabetes with the complications of blindness, kidney failure or amputations.
Obesity-induced liver disease so-called Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) may result in liver cirrhosis as with alcohol.
Projections are that NAFLD will become the commonest reason for liver transplantation by 2030. At £100,000 per liver transplant – as an initial outlay, this will be a huge burden on an already over-stretched NHS.
Obesity is the HIV of our age: Action is needed. Policy changes are required.
Thank you for Supporting Obesity Action Campaign.”
